Police detained a man who caused a five-vehicle accident along Bell Road near 79th Avenue Friday afternoon, according to a spokesman.

The incident occurred at about 11:30 a.m. April 14.

Glendale Police Department Officer Tiffany Smith said a male suspect was traveling eastbound on Bell Road at a high rate of speed when he collided with another vehicle, collecting three other vehicles.

"His speed was so significant it caused the chain reaction," Officer Smith said.

Initial reports said the accident involved three vehicles but was later updated to five.

The male suspect then fled the scene, and eventually was seen running towards a Target in the area. Police caught up with him near 75th Avenue.

Officer Smith said a Glendale officer pointed a gun at the suspect as he was attempting to flee, but detained him without further incident at about 12 p.m.

Police believe impairement was a factor in the accident and subsequent chase.

"He is being cooperative," Officer Smith said. "He probably realized his mistake for taking off running."

No one was transported due to the collision.

Police did not complete a formal booking. The 30-year-old man was released to family.

"He was cited and released, which is still an arrest," Officer Smith stated in an email.
