Glendale Independent covers the West Valley’s largest city, known for its professional sports, shopping and entertainment offerings. Glendale traces its hstory to February 1892, when the first residential area took shape near the Arizona Canal Co. project.
Glendale grew to about 1,000 residents in 1910, when the city was incorporated and Glendale High School was built in 1912. Historic buildings abound in downtown Glendale and nearby Catlin Court, as well as Sahuaro Ranch Park — a little more than two miles north of downtown.
Glendale boasts a population of nearly 250,000 and houses the NFL’s Arizona Cardinals. The Fiesta Bowl plays in the state-of-the-art State Farm Stadium, which also hosted three Super Bowls. Regional shopping attractions include Arrowhead Towne Center, Tanger Outlets and the Westgate Entertainment District. Tohono O’odham Nation’s Desert Diamond Casino, the first Indian gaming in the Northwest Valley, is located a mile from Westgate and Desert Diamond Arena.
Although tourism remains a focal point to Glendale, it is also home to higher educational institutions, including Arizona State University’s West campus, Midwestern University, Arizona Christian University and Glendale Community College.
In 2016, The Glendale Today merged with the Arrowhead Ranch Independent, established in 1995, delivering a combined circulation of 20,000 as the Glendale Independent. The monthly print newspaper focuses on schools, business, neighborhoods, city government and public safety. The free newspaper is delivered in mailboxes in North Glendale.
The digital daily newspaper covers the entire City of Glendale, delivering readers stories on issues affecting their quality of life and promoting involvement in their local neighborhoods through activism, entertainment and business news.
