Multiple motorcycle events are going on this week and weekend in the Valley, including the Phoenix Bike Fest in Peoria’s very own P83 district.

The city expects a large turnout at these events and the Peoria Police Department and Peoria Fire-Medical Department want to ensure the safety of everyone involved.

Whether you are riding a motorcycle or driving a car, it is important to share the road. Here are some safety tips for motorcycle riders and for drivers.

For Riders:

- Never operate a motorcycle impaired. No matter how good of a rider you are your judgment, balance and reaction times are all affected by impairment.
- Wear bright, reflective colors both during the day and at night, make yourself as visible as possible.
- Wear a DOT approved helmet and wear it correctly.
- Be alert, know where you are going and have no distractions.

For Drivers:

- Expect to see an increase in motorcyclists on the road this week.
- Motorcycles are often difficult to see. Be aware of your surroundings and take extra caution when checking blind spots.
- Because they are smaller it can be difficult to judge the relative distance or speed of a motorcycle, use caution when pulling out or turning in front of a motorcycle.
- Give motorcycles some extra space for breaking distance.
- Give your full attention to driving.
