Two students are no longer enrolled at Mountain Ridge High School after an alleged sexual assault against a wrestling teammate back in December, according to officials.
The incident occurred in Holbrook involving members of the Mountain Ridge wrestling team during a tournament.
"Two students were disciplined and are no longer students at the school," Deer Valley Unified School District spokeswoman Monica Allread stated in an email.
The student's guardian reported the incident to school administration more than a week after it occurred. They immediately contacted the school resource officer, who assisted the guardian in making a police report to the Glendale Police Department.
"We worked with Holbrook PD to help them in their investigation," Sgt. Scott Waite stated in an email. "We will continue to help Holbrook PD and the Deer Valley School District in whatever ways we can."
In December, school administration took action at the time the incident was reported. Administrators investigated the incident and spoke with parents of all members of the wrestling team.
In a Glendale police report released Tuesday, April 19, the victim stated other students told him they had been a victim of the same type of incident. The victim then told police he could not recall who had told him that. This information was not previously reported to the school.
Based on the new information, school administrators met with students and have found no other incidents occurring recently or in the past.
Administration notified Coach Corey Whitten of the incident. He was not aware of the situation until after the guardian reported it to the school administration, Ms. Allread stated.
School administration contacted every parent who had a wrestler in the program. They told parents there was a serious incident not involving their son, and officials had taken appropriate action and disciplinary consequences.
"Corrective actions have been taken that include: more character education for our student-athletes, intentional room assignments when traveling for athletics/activities, and increased education to student-athletes on all of the systems for reporting any actions that compromise the safety of themselves or others," Ms. Allread stated.
A police report request was made to the Glendale Police Department.
