The city of Tempe, founded in 1871, is known as the home of Arizona State University’s main campus.
Previously inhabited by the Hohokam people, Hispanic families from southern Arizona were among the first settlers who came to the Tempe area south of the Salt River and east of Phoenix. In another part of what would be Tempe, Charles Trumbull Hayden created a settlement known as Hayden’s Ferry, which was complete with a store, flour mill, warehouses, blacksmith shops and a ferry.
Eventually, the two settlements merged into one as they both continued to grow. The settlement was then named Tempe in 1879. Tempe today boasts a population of 189,834 as of 2023, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.
The Wrangler News Independent is a print newspaper dedicated to covering hyperlocal issues in the city of Tempe. It publishes twice a month as the Chandler/Tempe Independent and the Wrangler News Independent.
The Tempe Independent was first launched by Independent Newsmedia in April 2022. In July of the same year, JG Media National’s Phoenix operations were acquired, which included Community Impact of Chandler, Gilbert and Tempe in July 2022.
Independent Newsmedia most recently acquired Tempe's longest circulating newspaper the Wrangler News in October 2024.
