Two MCSO officers were injured during a rollover in Phoenix Friday morning involving a suspected impaired driver, according to a spokesman.

The Phoenix Police Department arrested Edwin Boice, 27, as a result of the incident occurring at the intersection of Adams Street and 19th Avenue after 3 a.m.

According to Sgt. Joaquin Enriquez, two MCSO detention officers were travelling westbound on Adams Street inside a jail transport van.

The van was then T-boned by a white older model Cadillac vehicle travelling southbound on 19th Avenue., according to Phoenix Police Department Sgt. Alan Pfhol. He stated Boice failed to stop at the red light signal.

The impact caused the van to roll over several times before stopping west of the intersection, Sgt. Enriquez stated in an email. A male officer, who drove the van, kicked out the windshield and helped his partner out of the van, pulling her to a safe distance. He started to provided medical aid until the Phoenix Fire Department arrived.

"While we are grateful that the injuries were not fatal, we expect that our Detention Officers will need time and assistance in restoring their health," Sgt. Enriquez stated. "We will be there to assist them and their families every step of the way."

The male officer was released as of noon March 24. The female officer has undergone medical procedures and was moved from the ER Trauma to ICU.

"While her injuries are not life threatening, they are severe in nature," Sgt. Enriquez stated. "She suffered serious trauma to her head but is in good spirits."

No inmates were in the van. The officers had dropped off prisoners at the jail prior to the collision, Sgt. Pfhol stated.

Boice remained at the scene with no injuries. Officials believe he was impaired at the time of the accident.

Police processed him for DUI and was booked into jail on one count of endangerment and one count of aggravated assault.
