The Sun West Art Club has sponsored a Nadaburg Elementary School District poster contest for the last 12 years to support student interest in the arts.

Ron Fernandez, chairman of the poster program, has been instrumental in continuing this effort and has worked closely with the schools to encourage student participation in the poster contest.

Ron Fernandez, Curtis McCandlish, Shannon Rankin and the winning students.

A special exhibit of the children’s winning projects was displayed at the club’s April 10 general meeting, whichwas followed by an awards ceremony. Winners were grouped by grade level: first through third, fourth through sixth and seventh and eighth.

The young artists received a ribbon and a monetary award.

The judge this year was Nancy Keyes, art club member.

The children had been asked to create images of “Community Super Heroes.” Their colorful posters represented a wide variety of heroes, from a superhero “caregiver” and those who support recycling and protection of the planet to more traditional armed services, firefighters and police force heroes.

One poster reminded viewers that, “Everyone can be a Super Hero!” with a caped crusader standing on the roof of an ordinary home waiting to come to someone’s rescue.

Principal Curtiss McCandlish, teacher Shannon Rankin, parents and the winning students participated in the event along with Sun West Art Club members. Refreshments followed the award ceremony.
