Glendale celebrates July activities, promotions

Glendale will hold a month-long celebration in July to highlight the essential value of local parks and recreation during National Park & Recreation Month.

Even though the temperatures are a bit high this time of year, it is the perfect time to learn about or rediscover all the amazing activities and opportunities Glendale’s Parks & Recreation Division has to offer.

Glendale is celebrating Park and Recreation Month, an initiative of the National Recreation and Park Association, and all the ways parks and recreation has the power to transform daily lives.

From providing residents places to play, get fit and stay healthy to fostering new relationships and forging a connection with nature, the city’s close-to-home community park and recreation facilities provide essential services and improve quality of life.

The mayor and City Council read a proclamation for National Park & Recreation Month at the June 27 meeting, and recognized several staff from the department as well.

The city’s celebration of this observance will run throughout the month of July at various recreation facilities and events in which residents can learn more about programs and services, get their “play on” with some interactive games at various events, and enter to win prizes with a special contest for various prizes, including many different items, from T-shirts to free monthly recreation center passes to a Fitbit.

The list of dates and locations staff will be out, interacting with residents is:
• Foothills Recreation & Aquatics Center, 5600 W. Union Hills Drive.:
Mondays 1-3 p.m. (July 17, 24, 31)
• Glendale Adult Center, 5970 W. Brown St.: Fridays 9-11 a.m. (July 14, 21, 28)

In addition, National Recreation and Park Association is hosting a weekly contest encouraging people to show them why play is so important in their lives. Visit www.nrpa.org/July for more information on how to participate. Entries can be submitted via the hashtag #NRPAPlayChallenge.

NRPA also encourages all people that support parks and recreation to share why they think play is so important with the hashtag #PlayOnJuly.
